Hi, I’m Lucas. I have set up this blog to document my journey of biking across the country through the organization Bike and Build. The route goes from Virginia to Oregon and will be accompanied by 28 others. As we bike we will be stopping to help build affordable homes with other affordable housing organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity. I’m pumped!
I was born with a rare condition called arthrogryposis. This caused my left arm to remain underdeveloped and fused at the elbow. All of my range of motion comes from my shoulder. I still find many uses for the arm, such as a clothes hangar, video game controller holder, something to wedge into cracks as I rock climb, clamp to hold items…etc. I have never really thought of it as a disability but more of a challenge. Something to overcome. I try not to let it hold me back in any way; I think it actually propels me to try new and different things (a lot of things that most people think cannot be done with one and a half arms i.e.- most things). I live by the moto ‘when there is a will there is a way’. I may do things differently but they still get done.
I am pretty adventurous and love to travel so this site might serve as a platform to share other future journeys as I already have some in the works. For now it’ll be about biking. Lots of biking. Hope you enjoy.
